I just picked up a 1981 JCM800 1960a loaded with 4 g12-65's .... i was wondering what your opinions of these speakers are. I find them very seventies sounding with great mids. Also why is the stock wiring so thin? What type of wire should i use? i was thinking of some heavy home theatre speaker wires.
thanks
Greg

The G12-65's have a very distinct personality, quite different from the 70 and 75 watt models. I remember them as being good for rock with a tight sound but I haven't come across any for a while. Nice find, pity that they are not being made today.
Marshall uses 18 gauge wiring in their cabs, as do most other amp companies. Why? Cost and ease of hookup and soldering I suppose.
It takes a fair amount of skill to properly rewire a cabinet and much more so if you are using 12 gauge wire. Do not attempt to do this unless you are sure of your soldering skills. Thick wire is very hard to solder while not melting the plastic jack nor damaging the speaker.
Honestly, I leave the original wiring in my vintage cabs.
Consider that you may lose resale value if you rewire the cabinet.
